I am a PostDoctoral scholar in Evolutionary Biology at the Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the University of Oregon (Eugene) advised by Stilianos Louca. My core research focus on how microbial diversity has arisen and has been shaped through biotic and abiotic factors. I am broadly interested in the process of speciation and extinction of microbial species and use genomic data to understand species dynamic as well as genomic variant and architecture dynamic.
Previously, I was a PhD student in Evolutionary Biology at the Institute of Biology of the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) advised by Hélène Morlon. There, I studied the diversification dynamic of microbial species by developing diversification models adapted to microbial datasets, fast inference techniques using deep learning and applying them to large reconstructed microbial phylogenies (check some details in the research section).
Specifically, I studied how the ecological and metabolically strategies across the microbial diversity has enable some clade to be more successful than others in their diversification. To do so, I have adapted simple diversification models to some limitations inherent to the microbial world (i.e. unknown global diversity) while proposing some new inference techniques that are likelihood free to overcome speed issues when dealing with large microbial clades. I have applied the developed models and inference machinery on a large bacterial phylogeny. I have investigated not only prokaryotic diversification but also protist one by focusing on how diatoms’ ecological niche width and singularity can relate to their diversification using Tara Oceans dataset.
I am willing to investigate this question further in the lens of how cooperation and niche construction of microbial species could enhance diversification.
Before that, I studied ecological engineering at Sorbonne University and interdisciplinary approaches in Life sciences at the CRI. I spent several internships abroad on Mayotte Island (Indian Ocean, check the project page) and Trinidad and Tobago (Caribbean, check the project page).
